Here is a timeline of major events worldwide (especially in Devon, UK), along with the major events in my family tree:

1546-47 - Black Death in Bovey Tracey killed 118 (usual count 14 deaths per year).
1551 - The Great Sweat (possibly influenza?) in Bovey Tracey.
1580s - Congregationalist movement (aka Puritans) begins, led by Robert Browne.
1587 - Ursula TWIGGES born Modbury
1590 - Emanuel BEERE born Modbury
1592-93 - The Plague in Bovey Tracey (87 deaths in 12 months).
1610 - Emanuel BEERE and Ursula TWIGGES married
1618 - George BEERE born Modbury
1640 - Oliver Cromwell begins serving in Parliament.
1641 - All males over 18 had to sign a protestation against Popery.
1642 - Bridge built over river at Bovey Tracey.
1642 - 22 August - Charles I raises his banner against the Roundheads at Nottingham.
1645 - Charles I surrenders to the Scots, who turn him over to Parliament (takes a year).
1646 - Battle of Bovey Heath.
1649 - Charles I executed.
1653 - Act of Settlement.
1658 - Cromwell dies.
1660 - Charles II reinstated.
1662 - Hearth tax introduced.
1665 - Black Death
1666 - Great Fire of London
1687 - Robert MURCH born
1687 - Elizabeth BASTONE baptised
1702-1714 - Queen Anne
1712 - Robert MURCH and Elizabeth BASTONE married Christmas Eve
1720 - Elizabeth BASTIN baptised
1721 - Gideon MURCH baptised Ottery St Mary
1727-1760 - George II
1744 - Gideon MURCH and Elizabeth BASTIN married
1745 - Jacobite Rebellion led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie).
1748 - Plague of locusts seen in Devon.
1753 - Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act (marriages have to be in CoE churches, separate books kept etc.).
1755 - Samuel MURCH baptised
1760-1820 - George III (Madness of King George, Pitt the Younger etc)
1768 - Captain James Cook  charted the east coast of Australia.
1772 - Potteries open in Bovey Tracey.
1774 - Samuel MURCH and Margaret MARSHALL married Boxing Day
1775 - Start of the American War of Independence against British rule.
1777 - Parliamentary report  recorded parish workhouses in operation at Kingsbridge (for up to 20 inmates), East Allington (20), West Alvington (30), Aveton Gifford (40), Bigbury (20), Blackawton (34), Loddiswell (25), Malborough (28), Ringmore (20), and Thurlestone (20).
1779 - Samuel MURCH baptised
1782 - Gilbert's Act (reform of Poor Law) - indoor relief to impotent poor
1785 - Mary BENDING baptised Boxing Day
1786 - John HAYWOOD, my great great great great grandfather was born.
1789 - Storming of the Bastille in Paris  and the start of the French Revolution.
1799 - Samuel MURCH and Mary BENDING married
1805 - Battle of Trafalgar and victory by Lord Nelson.
1806 - Samuel MURCH born
1807 - Slave trade abolished.
1808 - Johanna YEATS baptised
1815 - Battle of Waterloo and the defeat of Napoleon.
1816 - John HAYWOOD, my great great great grandfather was born.
1818 - Eliza Elliott BALL, my great great grandmother, was born.
1819 - John BALL, my great great grandfather, was born.
1821 - Samuel FARLEY, my great great grandfather, was born.
1824 - Severe storms on coasts of Devon and Cornwall.
1828 - Samuel MURCH and Johanna YEATS married Chudleigh
1828 - Jane Brooke FARLEY, my great great grandmother, was born.
1830 - First passenger steam railway opened in the UK.
1830 - Henry DAMERELL, my great great grandfather, was born.
1831 - Jane Ball DAMERELL, my great great grandmother, was born.
1832 - Cholera in Ottery St Mary.
1833 - Factory Act forbade the employment of children under 9 years old.
1835 - John Dunstone AVERY, my great great grandfather, was born.
1835 - Joseph BUCKINGHAM, my great great grandfather, was born.
1836 - Mary Ann Edgcombe EDGCOMBE, my great great grandmother, was born.
1837 - Emma Elizabeth Dunstone AVERY, my great great grandmother, was born.
1837 - Queen Victoria came to the throne.
1837 - Kingsbridge Union workhouse opened
1838 - George EDGCOMBE, my great great grandfather, was born.
1838 - Charles Dickens wrote "Oliver Twist".
1839 - John BLAGDON, my great great grandfather, was born.
1840 - Penny Post introduced in the UK.

1844 - 1 May - Railway comes to Devon.

1848 - Cholera in Ottery St Mary.
1851 - Great Exhibition took place at Crystal Palace,London.

1852 - Amanda Ley BUCKINGHAM, my great great grandmother, was born.
1855 - Florence Nightingale went  to nurse the injured in the Crimean War. 
1857 - Bertha Damerell BALL, my great grandmother, was born.
1859 - William John BALL, my great grandfather, was born.

1863 - Earthquake tremors felt in Ottery St Mary.
1865/66 - Cholera in Ottery St Mary.
1866 - John Henry BLAGDON, my great grandfather, was born. 
1866 - Huge fire in Ottery St Mary.
1866 - Enclosures Act.
1866 - South Devon Railway Co formed.
1868 - Susan Emma Farley BLAGDON, my great grandmother, was born.
1868 - Small earthquake felt in Ottery St Mary.
1871 - Electric telegraph opened at Ottery St Mary.
1871 - census
1872 - Samuel Murch HAYWOOD, my great grandfather was born.
1872 - 17 March - first horse-drawn tram in Plymouth.
1873 - The typewriter was invented.
1874 - Emma Maud Avery BLAGDON, my great grandmother, was born.
1875 - Electric lighting introduced to Britain.
1876 - Alexander Graham Bell transmitted the first message by telephone.
1881 - census
1886 - Statue of Liberty unveiled.
1888 - Kodak invented the box camera.
1891 - Great blizzard in Devon - snow on Dartmoor until June.

1893 - Independent Labour Party formed by Keir Hardie.
1894 - Minda Mary Edgcombe BALL, my grandmother, was born.
1896 - Speed limit for horseless carriages raised to 14 miles per hour. 
1897 - Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. 
1898 - Floods at Bovey Tracey.
1898 - William Hubert BALL, my grandfather, was born.
1900 - Relief of Mafeking.
1901 - Queen Victoria died.

1903 - Edmund George HAYWOOD, my grandfather was born.
1908 - Elsie Beatrice Blagdon HAYWOOD, my grandmother was born.
1911 - census
1912 - Titanic Disaster, when the transatlantic liner hit an iceberg on April 15th
1914 - Outbreak of World War One
1918 - Samuel Murch HAYWOOD (great grandfather) dies of influenza.
1919 - William Hubert BALL is awarded Meritorious Service Medal for service in Italy
1928 - Women over 21 in the UK gained the vote on equal terms as men.
1932 - Audrey Ball HAYWOOD, my mother was born on 14th December.
1933 - Edmund Samuel Murch HAYWOOD, my father was born on 21st May.
1939 - Outbreak of World War Two
1948 - Introduction of National Health Service in Britain.
